On 7th April annually, the world commemorates World Health Day, an initiative that originated during the First Health Assembly in 1948 and was formally established in 1950. The purpose of this global observance is to raise awareness about a specific health issue, emphasising a crucial area of focus for the World Health Organization.
Under the ’24 theme ‘My Health, My Right’, the importance of prioritising universal access to quality health services, education, information, clean water, fresh air, proper nutrition, adequate shelter, safe working conditions and a discrimination-free environment is underscored. The theme also underscores the fundamental principle that everyone, regardless of their location, deserves these essential elements for a healthy life.
Emphasising the notion that “Health is Wealth, Invest Wisely” and encouraging individuals to view their health as a valuable asset, this year’s theme calls attention to the significance of maintaining good health alongside material wealth. Despite the recognition of health as a human right in the constitutions of around 140 countries, the implementation of comprehensive laws to ensure universal access to healthcare remains a challenge. In 2021, over half of the global population, accounting for 4.5 billion people, did not have complete access to essential health services, showcasing a significant gap in healthcare coverage worldwide.
Various global issues, including diseases, disasters, conflicts and environmental degradation, continue to threaten the health and well-being of populations across the globe. Challenges such as air pollution, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, claim a life every five seconds, further highlighting the urgency of addressing environmental health concerns.
As the world faces these critical health challenges, World Health Day serves as a platform to advocate for the right to health for all individuals. The ‘My Health, My Right,’ campaign aims to promote equitable access to healthcare, education and environmental resources, striving for a healthier and more inclusive world for everyone.
